As the meditation progressed did your mind settle down and did you find it easier to keep your awareness focused on your breath? Or perhaps you grew restless and your mind began to wander more the longer the meditation went on.
Often when we start a meditation we're already somewhat distracted from whatever's been going on in our days and it takes a while for us to settle our minds down and be able to stay focused and concentrate. Then once we do become more focused, after a while we can find ourselves getting a little bored or restless and we start getting distracted and our minds starts to wander again.
There are also times when we're never able to really calm our minds enough over the course of the entire meditation to pay much attention to anything except the thoughts racing through our heads. And so if this was your experience, as it often may be especially when first learning to meditate (but also even after years of practice), it's nothing to worry about as it's a common experience that happens to everyone.
Being distracted or having your mind wander a lot doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. It's perfectly natural for our minds to wander, and remember, mindfulness meditation isn't about making your mind go blank and never having any thoughts or distractions. Mindfulness meditation simply involves:
Step 1: Pay Attention
Step 2: Notice When Your Mind Has Wandered
Step 3: Acknowledge Where Your Mind Is
Step 4: Let Go Of The Distraction
Step 5: Redirect Your Attention Back To Where You Want It
